GREEN PARTY PRESS CONFERENCE ON BONUSGATE
At the Dauphin County Courthouse at noon on Monday, February 1, Green Party of PA member Carl Romanelli, along with Steve Baker and Blyden Potts, spoke to members of the press about the implications of the bonusgate scandal for Romanelli's case and ballot access generally. The event was timed to coincide with opening arguments in the bonusgate trial of Former Democratic Party Whip Mike Veon and his staffers.
Romanelli emphasized the connection between Bonusgate and the Democratic Party's challenge of his ballot access signatures in his 2006 U.S. Senate, which removed him from the ballot, and the heavy financial penalty the court burdened Romanelli with as a result of the crimes committed by prominent Democrats and their staff. He also talked about how the same thing happened in 2004 with Ralph Nader's Presidential campaign in Pennsylvania, and called attention to the growing number of people who investigation has shown have been involved in bonusgate. Steve Baker discussed the chilling effect this has on candidates and noted that the GPPA is calling on Bob Casey to have the Democrats cancel their claims against Romanelli. Potts briefly mentioned the costs to Pennsylvania taxpayers being not just the bonus money but also what PA spent on the signature reviews, and how these events will tend to mean fewer choices in the voting booth for PA voters.
