GREEN NIGHT OUT: Occupy Movement Challenges War Economy

At Green Night Out on December 3, Bob Smith, organizer of Brandywine Peace Community, discussed, "How a non-violent Occupy Movement can challenge the permanent war economy.” Smith explained to the diners that the permanent war economy dates back to Charles (“Electric Charlie”) Wilson, CEO of General Electric, who, in 1950, became the director of the Pentagon’s Office of Defense Mobilization. No one today can remember a time when the U.S. was not at war, a condition which is extremely expensive and never ending. The U.S. military now consumes 60% of President Barack Obama’s discretionary budget for 2012.

Smith also explained his interest in Lockheed-Martin, which Brandywine Peace Community, [1], has been organizing against for 30 years. Smith said, “Lockheed-Martin is the largest military corporation in the world and the #1 war profiteer.”

“The Occupy Movement is an expression of anger at the extreme income disparity between the richest 1% and the rest of the citizens. Brandywine and the Peace Movement can learn from this popular outrage, and the Occupy Movement can learn from Brandywine’s campaign of non-violent resistance and research. ”Smith continued, “The top one-tenth of the richest one percent are the corporate war profiteers.
